Have you ever left anything on the back burner so long it starts to seem like a permanent fixture? Why is it that completing something is such a feeling of release? How can you balance the motion of life with the inertia of material things?
Name any human endeavor, from that jigsaw puzzle on your kitchen table to the launching of the space shuttle. Every artifact that you create begins with a word. Our ability to do this is what sets us apart from every one of our fellow creatures on this lush green earth. Words sprout from the seeds of thought, followed by action and the expenditure of energy.
The moment an idea leaves your mouth, its energy accelerates. Once your words reach another person’s ears, a cumulative effect takes place. Your idea may be met with enthusiasm or shot down out of hand. At some A decision is made, either within yourself or in collaboration with others, that the idea is worth taking action upon.
That’s when the rubber hits the road and things start to happen. And as you probably well know, ideas are a dime-a-dozen whereas fully completed projects are few and far between. Many great ideas lift off the launch pad with great fanfare only to find their way to the Siberia of the proverbial back burner.
The back burner, as everyone knows, is the place where great ideas and projects big and small gather dust, and if left long enough, eventually rust. There they sit, languishing away while the hands of time turn. Left long enough, forlorn and abandoned, they can simply melt away into nothingness.
And sometimes it’s the simple fact that circumstances intervened. That’s what you see in the photo above, a sculpture project that I took on for the Multi-Cultural Center at UC Berkeley. Well over three years ago, back in the ‘before days’ of pre-pandemic, I replied to an RFP and was awarded the commission to create an artistic metal trellis to divide a patio at the student center.
Many sketches and drawings were passed around, metal was purchased, and the lower sections were completed in the fall of 2019. Concurrent with this was a different project for the City of San Francisco that came with an urgent deadline. Once it looked like the pandemic was real and a lockdown was looming, the SF project was prioritized and the bases for this were put in storage.
And there they sat. Literally gathering rust. Gradually, as my workshop at The Crucible eased back into operation, I was able to begin work on the upper sections. But in this case, the extra time spent marinating on the back burner was a boon, since my design and concept shifted several times, all for the better.
Fortunately, this project had a seriously defined goal, and there was no way to abandon it or let it slide into the abyss of never-finished-work. Sometimes putting a project off to the the side for a while can actually improve the outcome, but letting things languish in limbo indefinitely is a recipe for frustration.
Take a look at your own back burner from time to time and ask yourself if it’s worth working towards completion or if it’s better to cut bait and move on. Either way is ok, as long as it lets your creative juice flow!
