This week’s Dance First Media Spotlight shines on The Edwardian World’s Faire & The 20th Annual Edwardian Ball! Celebrating it’s 20th year romantically reimagining the Edwardian era, this spectacular soiree is a two-night blend of “subculture and participant created revelry.”

With the beloved tales of Edward Gorey, the late-great macabre cult author, comic artist, illustrator and cartoonist providing an aesthetic backdrop to the event, you’ll find fine art, music, circus, theatre, fashion, literature, ballroom dancing, DJs, and assorted oddities galore.

Founded by Rosin Covin and co-produced by PARADOX Media and the Vau de Vire Society (of Soiled Dove fame), this is an action-packed spectacle of retro-historic modern culture. This year’s theme is The Golden Tale (or The Lost Lions), a book by Edward Gorey that sets the tone for the event.

You’ll encounter legions of period-costumed revelers as well as Dangerous Puppets, Earles of Newtown, Rosin Coven, Dark Garden Corsetry, Delachaux, Fou Fou Ha!, High Step Society!, John Brothers Piano Company, Junk Parlor, Kat Robichaud & the Darling Misfits, Kinetic Steam Works, Le Cancan Bijou, Mighty Dave Pellicciaro, Miz Margo, Shadow Circus Creature Theatre, Shovelman, Swingatto, The Grand Artique, The Klown, Trapeze, Traveling Spectacular, Vourteque, and many more.

Suffice it to say that in the grand tradition of over-the-top San Francisco spectaculars, The Edwardian World’s Faire and Ball over-tops them all! Step into a fantasy realm of real and historical imagination, re-created in the modern-day with no punches pulled. There’s something for everyone, from perplexing post-punk steam-driven machinery to amazing aerial acrobatics overhead.

Don your top hat and cinch up your corset, but don’t forget your dancing shoes! And be sure to bring along an extra coin or two, one of the most eye-popping elements is the Edwardian Mercantile which is a fabulous marketplace of authentic and inspired art, fashion, and ephemera to delight and amaze.
